Context:   According to Denault and Gardner (2023) bloodborne pathogens are a threat to human lives and remain a large public health problem. It is estimated that approximately three million exposures to bloodborne pathogens occur annually. In most work or laboratory settings, bloodborne infections are often due to accidental punctures. In the United States, there are an estimated 400,000 sharp injuries per year in the hospital setting.
